چکیده
• Both ventricular size and pressure have been considered as possible determinants of myocardial oxygen consumption (Vo2) m studies of cardiac energetics in isolated dogheart preparations.' In other work, however, only pressure has been examined for its relationship to ventricular energy requirements. Sarnoff and co-workers advanced the tension-time index (area beneath the systolic pressure curve) as a correlate of myocardial Vo,,, and the cardiac effort index (product of mean aortic pressure and heart rate) was proposed by Katz et al. for the prediction of ^o.,-"' The importance of these indices has been confirmed for the intact dog heart. Despite the interest in ventricular size and its bearing on ventricular wall tension,* the role of ventricular volume as a specific variable influencing the magnitude of myocardial

Force-time integral decreases with ejection despite constant oxygen consumption and pressure-volume area in dog left ventricle.
We have shown that systolic pressure-volume area (PVA), which is equivalent to the total mechanical energy generated by ventricular contraction, correlates linearly with myocardial oxygen consumption, VO2, in canine left ventricle. Systolic force-time integral, FTI, also correlates with VO2. In this study, stroke volume was increased from 0 (isovolumic) in isolated cross-circulated canine left ...
متن کاملTime-invariant oxygen cost of mechanical energy in dog left ventricle: consistency and inconsistency of time-varying elastance model with myocardial energetics.
We studied whether the oxygen cost of mechanical energy is time-invariant in the excised, cross-circulated canine heart. The total mechanical energy generated by ventricular contraction can be quantified by the total pressure-volume area (PVA) according to the time-varying elastance model. In this model, mechanical energy generated until a specified time (t) during systole can be quantified by ...

In 10 excised, cross-circulated, isovolumically beating dog left ventricles, we examined the effects of bigeminy, including, paired-pulse stimulation, on cardiac oxygen consumption (Vo2) and evaluated whether the Vo2 versus pressure-volume area (PVA) relation obtained from regularly beating hearts in our previous studies could account for the changes in Vo2 during bigeminies with various coupli...
متن کاملIndependence of myocardial oxygen consumption from pressure-volume trajectory during diastole in canine left ventricle.
We have found that myocardial oxygen consumption is linearly correlated with the systolic pressure-volume area in the canine left ventricle. This pressure-volume area is a specific area in the pressure-volume diagram that is circumscribed by the end-systolic pressure-volume relation line, the end-diastolic pressure-volume relation curve, and the systolic segment of the pressure-volume trajector...
متن کاملEffect of positive inotropic agents on the relation between oxygen consumption and systolic pressure volume area in canine left ventricle.
We analyzed the effect of positive inotropic agents on the relation between left ventricular oxygen consumption and the systolic pressure-volume area. Pressure-volume area is a measure of total mechanical energy for ventricular contraction, and is a specific area in the ventricular pressure-volume diagram circumscribed by the end-systolic and end-diastolic pressure-volume relation curves and th...
